Piling

Piling

Piling is a common construction technique on projects of all sizes. It involves driving in supporting members that will form the deep foundations required to support large and heavy structures.

These piles allow for the placing of structures in areas that would otherwise be unable to support them due to the conditions of the soil on and under the surface. The length of the piles transfers the load of the structure away from the unstable areas, and moves it deeper into the ground where it is better supported.

Piling is a quick and cost effective method of strengthening the foundations of a building when done during initial construction, as the piles can be driven straight into the ground without the need for any drilling.

When an existing foundation needs to be strengthened, this is often done with micropiles, a process known as Underpinning.

Piling works best in soft or weak soils, and these soil types are also where you are most likely to need piles to support structures. Soils that are silty, sandy, or high in clay are prime candidates for piling, as is anywhere that is marshy or has a high water table.

Piling is also commonly used when a structure has to support very heavy and concentrated loads, such as bridges, water tanks, and high rise buildings.

Pilings are usually made of one of three different materials: wood, steel, or concrete.

Wooden piles are highly economical and easy to install, but their size is limited by how big a tree trunk can be sourced.

Steel piles are quick to install and are ideal for hammering into rock or sturdy soil, but will degrade and eventually fail if installed into corrosive soil. Steel is used when installing Screw Piles.

Concrete piles can be precast offsite, or cast in situ directly into the ground onsite. They resist corrosion and can be installed in standing water, but are very heavy to move and install.

Don’t know what kind of pile you should use? Don’t stress, we’ll tell you as part of our assessment of the site.

We’ll also assess your site to determine the correct size and depth of pile for your job. What depths can we do? Whatever you need! We can customise equipment to complete a variety of depths, so you’ll always have the right size.
